Chris Weidman: ‘Ian Machado Garry needs to frustrate Islam Makhachev’

UFC 330 title challenger Ian Machado Garry has a tall order ahead of him. “‘The Future” will try to dethrone welterweight champion and top pound-for-pound fighter in the world Islam Makhachev in the UFC 330 main event on Saturday.

He’ll enter the title bout at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia as a significant underdog. He’ll have to fend off Makhachev’s wrestling to win and former middleweight champion Chris Weidman believes Garry needs to frustrate the champion.

“It’s going to be hard to do, but he needs to frustrate Islam. I think that’s the biggest thing, too. Islam wants to go out there and just crush everybody he fights, so he needs to just weather the chaos and keep his distance and get Islam to the point where he’s getting frustrated and making bad decisions out there,” Weidman said on Deep Waters.

“I think he’s the weaker guy when it comes to grappling. So, I think Islam takes him down. He’s just going to be too strong for him to be able to pass guard, get to that half-guard shoulder pressure, mount. It’s like a really bad situation for him.”

While Weidman believes Garry could present problems for Makhachev, he ultimately predicted that the champion will retain the title via submission on Saturday.
